Installing a heat pump: Requirements
Heat pumps in apartment buildings are among the most common heating systems and are increasingly being retrofitted in older buildings. The air-to-water heat pump is particularly suitable for retrofitting as it is comparatively easy to install. When retrofitting a heat pump in an apartment building or old building, there are two key requirements that must be met:
-
Isolation: The first and most important measure is effective isolation of walls and windows in the building. Good insulation minimizes heat loss and thus reduces heating requirements. It is therefore a fundamental prerequisite for the efficient operation of a heat pump and helps to minimize electricity consumption.
-
Optimizing the heating surface: When using heat pump heating systems, heating over a large area is particularly advantageous. Underfloor or wall heating systems are particularly suitable here as they have a larger surface area. This enables effective heat dissipation from the circulating heating water without the need for high temperatures.
The principle of the refrigeration cycle
Vaporization
In the evaporator, the liquid refrigerant absorbs heat, for example from the ambient air. In the process, it evaporates and changes to a gaseous state.
Liquefaction
In the condenser, the refrigerant transfers the absorbed heat to the building's heating system, whereby it returns to its liquid state.
Compression
The pressure of the gas is increased by a compressor. This also leads to an increase in temperature.
Relaxation
An expansion valve lowers the pressure of the refrigerant again. As a result, it returns to its original pressure and temperature level and can be used again in the evaporator circuit.
Installing a brine-to-water heat pump
The brine-to-water heat pump uses the ground as a reliable heat source and is therefore considered extremely efficient, as the ground temperature remains constant all year round. Two different methods are available for the ground work:
Geothermal probes are inserted into the ground through vertical boreholes between 40 and 100 meters deep. This type of heat pump can also be installed at a later date without any problems.
Surface collectors, on the other hand, are laid horizontally at a depth of only one to two meters. The area of the collectors should be around 1.5 to twice as large as the area of the building to be heated. This method requires more space and is therefore particularly suitable for new buildings.
Before installing a brine-to-water heat pump, it should be noted that the system's fan makes a low noise. It is advisable to consult with your neighbors in advance.
Installing a water-to-water heat pump
When installing a water-to-water heat pump, two wells are used to tap the groundwater as a heat source: a suction well draws in the warm groundwater, while an absorption well returns the cooled groundwater. Water-to-water heat pumps are characterized by their high efficiency, but they only pay off if the groundwater table is not too deep.
It is important to note that drilling is not permitted everywhere. Various factors such as the composition of the water and the amount of water available play a role in the approval process. The district administration office is a point of contact for information on this subject.
The water-to-water heat pump extracts the warm groundwater via a suction well, extracts the heat and then returns the cooled groundwater via the absorption well.
Installing an air-to-air heat pump
An air-to-air heat pump is installed using ventilation systems that transfer ambient heat into the house. However, these heat pumps only heat the indoor air and require a separate heat source for hot water. They are therefore rarely found in conventional detached houses.
Air-to-air heat pumps are particularly suitable for passive or low-energy houses, but less so for existing buildings. They can be installed both indoors and outdoors and require annual maintenance of the ventilation system.
The noise level of these heat pumps is up to 50 decibels, which corresponds to normal conversation.
Installing an air-to-water heat pump
Air-to-water heat pumps offer the flexibility to be installed both inside and outside the home, with heat pump installers opting for an outdoor installation in most cases. There are several aspects to consider when finding the optimum location:
-
Proximity to power and water pipes is important.
-
Ideally, the boiler room should be a maximum of twelve meters away.
-
A distance of 20 centimeters from the house wall is required.
-
A distance of at least one meter should be maintained from all windows close to the ground.
-
A location that is as sheltered from the wind and pollen as possible should be aimed for.
Despite the progressive reduction in noise, a distance of at least three meters from the nearest neighbor must be maintained, depending on the federal state.
